Multidisciplined investigation undertaken in stages due to complexities associated with existing infrastructure and unexpected finds. Site assessments included several soil and groundwater investigations, waste classification, asbestos materials inventory. Multiple sources of contamination were identified, including TCE in groundwater associated with an adjacent (off-site) UST, an on-site diesel UST, impacted fill material, impacted groundwater, and localized hot spots of heavy metal impacts. Remedial works included removal friable asbestos lagging within the boiler room, removal of the boiler unit and associated UST.
Environmental restoration and contaminant management during significant re-developed of large sections for use as nature trails and bicycle paths. The project included an initial assessment of the site for soil contamination and acid sulfate soil. The site was found to be heavily contaminated with asbestos, heavy metals, PAHs, TPH and contain acid sulfate soils. The management plan included supervising site construction work, the construction of landscaped mounds to burry contaminated material and a community education program.

Asbestos awareness training was undertaken along with a managed and monitored trial phase for the site drilling works, followed by completion of construction works.
